This vintage illustration depicts character sketches by celebrated English architect Inigo Jones in the early 17th century. His text to the right reads “for the king, Masques, 1637″. These particular characters are musicians for an unidentified Shakespeare performance, and consist of two men playing stringed instruments and dancing and a ballad singer on the right. This facsimile of the original was published in an 1853 biography of Inigo Jones and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography
